The Weekend Party Porta Potty Checklist: Count, Place, Prep

A porta potty for a backyard party in Mesquite takes about 10 minutes to plan with a short checklist. This guide covers how many units to order, where they go, gate width, HOA rules and the Friday drop. Work through it a week or two before the party, and the day itself stays simple.
How many porta potties does a backyard party need?
A backyard party needs 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests over 4 hours. Add 20% more capacity when you serve alcohol, then round up. A 4-hour birthday with 30 guests needs 1 unit. A 6-hour graduation party for 100 guests needs 3 units, or 4 with a bar.
Longer parties need more units because use builds up over the hours. Kids also visit more often than adults. If you are close to the line, order the extra unit.
| Guests and hours | No alcohol | With alcohol |
|---|---|---|
| 30 guests, 4 hours | 1 unit | 1 unit |
| 50 guests, 4 hours | 1 unit | 2 units |
| 75 guests, 5 hours | 2 units | 3 units |
| 100 guests, 4 hours | 2 units | 3 units |
| 100 guests, 6 hours | 3 units | 4 units |
For other guest counts, use our porta potty calculator for parties and events. If a guest uses a wheelchair or walker, swap one unit for a wheelchair-accessible porta potty.
Where should the porta potty go in a backyard?
The porta potty should sit on flat, firm ground within about 15 feet of where our truck can park. That 15-foot limit is the reach of the service hose. The tank must be pumped before pickup, so a unit placed too far back can delay removal on Monday.
- Pick a level spot. A small slope is fine, but a tilted unit rocks and the door may not close well.
- Skip sprinkler heads, septic lids, fresh sod and low tree limbs.
- Turn the door away from the patio and the food tables.
- Keep a clear walking path, and light it if the party runs past sunset.
- After rain, Mesquite clay turns soft. A driveway edge or gravel pad holds the unit steady.
Will a porta potty fit through my backyard gate?
A standard porta potty is about 44 inches wide, 48 inches deep and 88 inches tall. Plan on a clear gate opening of about 48 inches. That gives the crew room for hands and a dolly. Measure post to post, and look for branches or wires lower than 8 feet.
- Measure the gate.Measure the narrowest point, including the latch and hinges.
- Walk the path.Check for steps, tight turns or soft ground between the driveway and the spot.
- Look up.The unit is over 7 feet tall, so low eaves, wires and limbs matter.
- Send a photo.Text a picture of the spot when you book. The driver will know the plan before arriving.
If the gate is too narrow, a side yard or the driveway near the gate works well. Guests walk a few extra steps, and the unit stays easy to service.
Do I need HOA or city approval for a party porta potty?
Most Mesquite backyard parties on private land need no city permit for 1 or 2 porta potties. HOA rules can still apply. Creek Crossing and Solterra have their own covenants. Read your CC&Rs before a unit sits where the street can see it.

A block party that closes a street is different. Mesquite asks for a special event permit at least 45 days ahead. The fee runs $50–$250 based on attendance, and Building Inspection answers questions at 972-216-6212.
How does Friday drop-off and Monday pickup work?
For a weekend party, we drop the porta potty Friday and pick up Monday at no extra rental charge. Delivery runs between 7 AM and 6 PM. The driver calls 30 to 60 minutes ahead, so you can step out and show the exact spot.
Friday delivery slots fill first for weekend parties, so book early in the week when you can. Thursday delivery costs the same.
If you cannot be home, mark the spot with a cone or chair and leave the gate unlocked. A standard weekend unit runs $225–$295 with delivery and pickup included. See the details on our event porta potty rental page.
Should I lock the porta potty and tell guests anything?
Lock the porta potty from Friday until the party starts if the unit sits near a street or alley. Ask for a lock when you book. On the day, tell guests 3 things. Show them the unit, show them where to wash, and ask them to keep trash out.
- Put a small trash can by the door for wipes and cups.
- Leave a spare roll of toilet paper on a shelf nearby.
- Set a solar light on the path for evening guests.
- Remind kids to close the door so the unit stays cooler.
Hand washing matters at any party with food. A hand wash station runs $95–$175 per event and sits right beside the unit.
What does a 7-day party checklist look like?
A 7-day checklist keeps the porta potty off your worry list. Book 7 days out and settle HOA approval by day 5. Prep the spot by day 2, and greet the driver on Friday. On Monday, leave the path clear so pickup takes about 10 minutes.
- Day 7: Book.Give guest count, hours, alcohol plans and the address.
- Day 5: Approvals.Get HOA or family sign-off and confirm the spot.
- Day 2: Prep.Mow, move cars and mark the spot.
- Friday: Delivery.Answer the driver's call and check the door latch.
- Monday: Pickup.Keep the gate open and the hose path clear.

Questions readers ask
Can the porta potty sit on my driveway?
Yes. A driveway is flat and firm, which makes it a good spot. Leave room to open car doors, and keep the unit off the sidewalk.
What if it rains the day before my party?
Wet clay gets soft, so we may suggest a firmer spot near the driveway. Text us a photo, and the driver will place the unit where it will stay level.
My party is tomorrow. Is it too late?
Not always. Call by 12 noon Monday through Saturday for same-day delivery. A $75–$125 dispatch fee applies only if a truck must be re-routed.
Can I add a hand wash station after I book?
Yes. Call or text before your delivery day, and we will add the station to the same Friday drop.
Do I need to be home when the unit is picked up?
No. Keep the gate unlocked and the path clear. The crew pumps the tank and loads the unit without needing you there.
